Background

Jack's Mill School is a Heritage One Site because of the educational experieiment that took place at the school in the 1930s under the headmastership of Edward Darricott. When he got the pupils to design, build and furnish a model cottage the first exercise in technical education in Aotearoa took place. The cottage still stands, but the school and the site had become derelict and somewhat empty of purpose. Te Puawai approached DOC and the Heritage SOciety with the proposal to repair and upgrade the school so that it become a modern educational innovator. The idea was accepted and Manatu Taonga have provided the funding
