Kotuku has been created from the old Jack's Mill School, designated a Heritage One site because of the innovative educational experiment that took place in the 1930s under the headmastership of Edward Darricott. Darricott instituted the first experiment in technical education when he enabled the pupils to design, build and furnish a child-sized cottage. The school site had become somewhat derelict and empty of purpose and Te Puawai approached the local heritage society and the Department of Conservaiton who own the site with the proposition of repairing and upgrading the school so that it could become a residential facility in turn hosting educational innovation. Manatu Taonga, the MInistry of Culture and Heritage have funded the project.
